Interview ペタルーナ代表 大城 夕紀 Yuki Ohshiro

First of all, why did you decide to open petaluna?

I actually spent my high school years in Brisbane, Australia and it was during my time there that I was first exposed across natural medicine and remedies. At the time it was said that Australia was about 15 years ahead of Japan with regards to the use of natural medicines, and the use of essential oils and herbs were and still are of great importance in people’s daily lives.

For example, the Aboriginal Australians have traditionally been using eucalyptus and tea trees for their natural healing properties for many years. The knowledge that has come from these communities with regards to the usage and properties of these herbs and oils are held in high regard. I look back to my time in Australia with great nostalgia and remember visiting pharmacies (drug stores) selling natural medicine fondly.

Ever since I was young I have suffered with a number of allergies and asthma. During my time in Australia, if any symptoms were to occur, rather than go to hospital, I would walk on foot to the pharmacy instead. I enjoyed talking with the shop staff about natural therapies and appreciated the advice they gave me to help deal with my conditions. It then struck me that this type of pharmacy probably didn’t exist back in Japan at the time.

How do you feel now looking back on the company 10 years later?

I would have to describe it as 10 years of new experiences and new encounters. For example; my encounters with new aromas, with new soaps and products from Australia, my encounters with our customers, with the father of Okinawan farming, and my encounters with our staff has meant that it has been a period of experiencing brand new things and new people. I am extremely grateful for everything that has happened over the past 10 years, and I hope to continue my work into the future.

What differentiates petaluna from different brands?

Like what I found in Australia, I wanted to create a new style of ‘pharmacy’ here in Japan. A place where you can hang out that is relaxed, carefree, and somewhere you can make conversation freely and openly. The relationships between our staff and customers is at the heart of everything that we do. Our staff love being able to get close to our customers, listen to their worries, and help to alleviate them through teaching them about the effects and impact of aromatherapy. We feel a huge sense of pride and achievement when we see the impact of our work and the sense of relief and smiles from our customers.

In store, our staff will determine your skin type and talk about any concerns that you have. Leading on from this they will offer advice on what can be done to meet your individual needs. It’s not just about explaining and selling our products however, but also about learning about the effects of aromatherapy and learning something deeper about your body and soul. As a result, we feel a great sense of satisfaction in the work that we do.

10 years has passed, and so much has changed.
For example, when we first opened 10 years ago, we weren’t selling our own original products, whereas now almost all of our products are original to the petaluna brand. We have achieved this by carefully crafting them individually and I am very proud of the products that we stock.

What makes aromatherapy so special to you?

For me, it has become a natural part of my daily life in a way that I could not do without. It can be used in so many different situations; if you find yourself bitten by an insect and it’s itchy, you want to feel more energetic or concentrate better at work, you can’t sleep, or you have dry skin. We can offer you a solution through aromatherapy. We also understand that things change; people’s lifestyles, their conditions etc., and we are here to help you realise what fragrances and what therapies will be the most beneficial to you.

Additionally, we have workshops available for people of all ages; for mothers, for children, those of us in work etc. Connecting with our customers through these workshops and through aromatherapy brings us great delight.

At our stores, all of our staff are proud of their deep understanding and knowledge of our products in addition to their impeccable customer service skills. As a result, we are confident listening to our customers individual worries and coming up with tailored solutions and ideas for them. We are also proud of our local organic Okinawan products that have been assessed and certified through the strictest procedures with the highest attention to detail.

What are your thoughts for the future?

Over the next 10 years I am looking to incorporate child services into our business; including parent and child classes, maternity care, postnatal care and treatment, information regarding how to bring up your children, and incorporating aromatherapy into all of these things is something that I believe is becoming increasingly important to people. Currently we have been working with work experience groups on a yearly basis and have been supporting a nursery schoolteachers project since 2015. Through aromatherapy we would like to continue to have a positive impact on our region.

Many of our staff are now getting married and having children and have mentioned how they want to create and foster a family environment. We want to make sure that we as a brand are supporting them in doing so and have positive maternity, child rearing and environmental maintenance systems in place so that they can continue to work closely with us in the future. Now, over half of our staff have children, compared to 10 years ago where that number was just 1! We are so happy that many of our staff have come back to work with us after their maternity period.

Lastly, we have a strong connection with our brand and identify as ‘Okinawa Aroma’. Our dream is to help Okinawa Prefecture develop as a region whilst at the same time showcasing Okinawa Aroma around the world.

Finally, would you like to add any further comments for your customers?

In November 2008 we opened our first store in Shintoshin in Naha City under the theme of ‘our local aromatherapy store.’ We focused heavily on creating a space that was welcoming and easy for people to visit and start a conversation with our staff.

Through our motto of togetherness, we want to continue creating spaces where we can connect with our customers, with our staff, with the local area, and with the future!

I look forward to seeing you all in store!

大城 夕紀About Yuki Oshiro

Born in Naha city and brought up outside of the prefecture, Yuki attended high school in Brisbane, Australia for 3 years. It is during this time that she came across natural medicine and remedies for the first time.

Ever since she was 3 years old, she struggled with allergies and asthma and visiting the hospital became a daily routine. However, ever since discovering the benefits of natural medicine she has been able to face her illnesses head on. After graduating from Meio University she knew she wanted to work in a role that would bring joy to women everywhere and worked for 3 years as an Aesthetician. It was during this time that she found herself becoming increasingly charmed by and interested in Australian aromatherapy brands and personally started negotiations with an Australian company to establish an agency in Japan.

Through this she began to feel closer to aromatherapy here in Okinawa and began preparations to open her own store. It was in 2008 that the first store in Shintoshin was opened and it was in this store that she sold her first products made from Okinawan herbs.

ペタルーナが考える本物のオーガニック

ACO (Australian Certified Organic) is a certification that guarantees the highest quality of organic products. It is recognised by AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service). ACO is a collection of different multinational agencies; IFDA (International Family Doctors Association), USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standard) that certifies organic products worldwide. As a result, it guarantees standards higher than the standard JAS classification. ACO does this by consistently assessing all of its associated products from source to bottle and upholding the highest quality products worldwide.

The Organic label means that our products have been made without using pesticides or fertilisers and that the land benefits greatly from the exclusive use of organic fertilisers. The reliance on pesticides and fertilisers has led to a destruction of the natural balance in the soil and is also harming those who work on the land. We are committed to preventing this from happening and developing a natural production system that doesn't harm the environment and protects the earth’s future.

Holding this certification means that we can guarantee the quality of our products, by assessing them at all stages of the production cycle, you can feel assured that the product will be held to the highest standards. Growing all plants on rich land unaffected by pesticides wields excellent results in comparison to land that has been affected by chemicals. Even though moving to a system of not using pesticides in agriculture can be met with higher costs, both monetary and from the environment itself, for the benefit of the earth and its offspring, ACO are extremely passionate about the use of natural systems.
